  Wellington Storm - the epicentre of New Zealand Floorball

Floorball is a fast-growing type of hockey played indoors with state-of-the-art sticks and a light weight super high perfomance ball.

The Wellington Storm Floorball Club is the 2009, 2010 and 2011 New Zealand National Floorball champion and also the first ever New Zealand team to compete in the Australian Floorball Open.

First games for Wellington Storm at AFO

 The 2012 Australian Floorball Open started today and both the Juniors and the Men's teams from Wellington played their first games.

The Juniors were first up against Sale. It was a great contest and the scores were locked at 1:1 after the first 15 minutes. In the second period, Sale took the lead and scored 6 goals to take the score to 7:2 after 2 periods. Wellington put up a tight defence in the third period and the final score was 8:2.

The Men's team played Bondi Raptors in their first game and started off on the wrong foot, having Bondi score the first goal after just three seconds.

For the third year in a row, Wellington Storm will have a Men's team in the Australian Floorball Open. The AFO 2012 is the biggest Floorball tournament in this part of the world and will have clubs from Australia and possibly Singapore, plus Wellington as the only team from New Zealand. The tournament is held in Pakenham, just east of Melbourne from April 12th to 15th. Over 4 days, group games and the final round will mean 6-8 games for the Wellington team. Initial goal is to qualify for the quarterfinals, which was achieved in 2010.

The 4th Wellington Open took place on Saturday 15. and Sunday 16. of October in the new ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie, Wellington.  The brand new Floorball rink guaranteed a top venue and the games were of a very good standard with some close and exciting results. A record number of seven teams were competing for the Tournament trophy, including teams from Auckland and Palmerston North. The tournament was also the New Zealand National Championship Tournament as it was in the previous years.

The teams were split into two groups for the round robin games.

Floorball showcased at Indoor Community Sports Centre Open Day 27. August

Floorball is one of the sports on display at the Open Day for the new Indoor Community Sports Centre in Kilbirnie on Saturday, 27th of September. From 10:00am to 3:00pm Floorball activities will be running to introduce the sport to the public and so show how exciting this young sport can be. The ICSC will be the new home for Floorball in Wellington and Wellington City Council have kindly imported a proper Floorball rink for our activities. This is the first such rink in the Wellington area and only the second one in New Zealand.

Best overseas team at AFO 2011

Wellington Storm played a total of 7 games at the recent Australian Floorball Open in Sale, Victoria. After a win and a loss on the first day (see previous news item), the second day started with another tough game against the team from Storybridge. The team from Queensland eventually finished the tournament in second place and was a very strong oposition, winning 5:0 against the Wellington team.

The next game was against the team from Republic Polytechnic from Singapore. Wellington got off to a good start and managed to get ahead 4:2 in the third period.
